Community Arts: Boatbuilding
Introduction

Ireland is a maritime country and many of its coastal communities still
retain a strong attachment to the sea.
Over the centuries boats have been designed uniquely adapted to work in
the often treacherous Atlantic Ocean.
Boatbuilding L21684
This NCVA
level 2 module is designed to give the learner the knowledge and skills
involved in the building of a wooden boat and an appreciation of the different
methods of construction.
This module
will enable the learner to:
- Develop
an awareness of the different techniques involved in wooden boatbuilding.
- Develop
the technical competence to read and evaluate boat plans and designs;
and undertake basic lofting.
- Learn
to use woodworking tools and equipment safely.
- Develop
the skills necessary to complete the assigned project work.
In
September 2000, our students began building "Heidi", a 12 foot
skiff for oar and sail.
This boat,
based on a design by Richard Kolin, is typical of an American flat bottomed
skiff. It is built in the traditional clinker fashion but with the benefit
of somewhat more modern materials. This summer we hope to have the planking
complete. Why not drop in to give a hand!
