The Web Authoring module will familiarise participants with what is involved
in designing, constructing and maintaining a web site.
To this end the participants will learn to code in the latest version of the HTML language
(used to construct web pages) and CSS (used to create style sheets which control the look and feel of the web pages), as well as to use a HTML editor. They will
also learn how to manipulate graphics using Graphics Applications.
Content
The module will concentrate on the following:
- Site design and layout
- Site navigation
- XHTML
- Identification of potential target audience
- Generation of appropriate content (text and graphics)
- Creation of CSS style sheets
- Access (download) speed
- Publishing of site to the web and online testing
- Promotion of site with Search Engines and Directories

Assessment
Each
participant will design and build a web site as their module project.
Assessment will be on this project according to the following criteria:
- Correct use of HTML (50%)
- Effectiveness of web site (50%)

Course Requirements
To participate in this module you will need to be able to use a computer
at a basic level - you must be familiar with the mouse, keyboard, opening
and closing files etc.
Participants will be expected to do a certain amount of research (on
and off line) and to source material for their projects outside of class.
A number of books on web design issues will be made available in the
Centre for students to consult.
On-line course notes are also available to participants.
